The Yellowstone River is usually quite high in June. The hottest months are great for floating the river, biking, hiking, etc. The wildflowers are absolutely glorious in June. September is optimal for finding black bears fattening up for the winter, along with their very small young following behind. RATES for October and May $850/week $500/3 nights $175 per night October, to some, is the best time to visit Yellowstone National Park. Miss the crowds, have the roads practically to yourself. Check with them before visiting- I think some of the activities shut down in mid-October. Still warm, October is a peaceful time to float the shallow Yellowstone River. May is a great time to see grizzly in Yellowstone National Park. They are just waking up and hungry. Herons and Pelicans have come back to town and large flocks of pelicans are common floating in the sky above. RATES for November through April $725/week $400/3 nights $150 per night In November, nearby downhill ski mountains open in Bozeman and Neihardt. Livingston is in between the two. Downtown Livingston has many independently owner businesses that are great for finding unique gifts for your holiday shopping. Winter hiking is great because the ground is firm and not muddy. December in Montana. Why not spend the holidays here? Better place than any other. Going to Yellowstone National Park in the winter is very rewarding. You have to get to Livingston in order to go through the only open door during these months. Wolf watching in Lamar valley(YNP) is good. Area snowshoeing is great. Cross country or nordic skiing is also very popular. Montana has a 7% Bed TAX - but no sales TAX! Reservations: When you decide your dates, call 406-223-0021 or We will send you an invoice. It has all of the benefits of a small town(no traffic jambs, friendly happy people, a connection with nature) but the sophistication of a city. It has at least 8 non- chain restaurants, all with very good food. People here are picky about their food! See http://www.livingston-chamber.com/restaurants.asp. It has a beautiful downtown. Beautiful historical buildings but at night a flare for high quality neon. There is a night life as there a a few bars. There are contemporary music acts at Highsides. Standard great rock and roll at The Murray Historic Hotel and blues at The Owl Bar. The Depot Museum offers high quality solo and small blues acts throughout the year. There are many art galleries in Livingston ranging from Western to contemporary art.Every month in the summer they have a "gallery walk" when all of the galleries stay open late and perhaps will offer wine and crackers to the gallery goers- it is a very popular activity for guests and locals alike. See www.livingstongalleries.com. Livingston has a beautiful old depot which houses The Depot Center (see www.livingstonmuseums.org/depot) which is a very nice musuem. There is also the Federation of Flying Fishing Museum (see www.livingstonmuseums.org/fish/index.html and The Yellowstone Gateway Museum of Park County which houses a collection of historical items and memorabilia. But you are coming here because of the incredible natural environment right? Livingston sits at the foot of the Absarokee Mountain range. It is the gateway to the famous "Paradise Valley" which is situated between the Absarokee Mountains and the Gallatin Mountain Range. The Yellowstone River flows through that valley and through the town of Livingston. To the north east there is the Crazy Mountain Range. All of these mountains offer abundant hiking. Of course the Yellowstone River offers fly fishing and floating. White water rafting is great a little further south around Gardiner Montana(gateway to Yellowstone National Park). Yellowstone National Park is 50 miles from Livingston. This park is amazing. It is such a marvel that it draws millions of travelers in the summer months. The less traveled months are May and then September, October and winter months. Livingston through Gardiner is the only Yellowstone door open in the winter. You can snowshoe, nordic ski or simply walk or drive. Winter is a good time to see wolves and there is always a moose or two wading the Lamar River. If you want to bring your mountain bike there are some lightly traveled back roads through Paradise Valley. For all of your outdoor activities go to Livingston's own Timber Trails and talk to the people there. They can tell you everything you need to know about hiking, biking, skiing, etc. And for boats, see Rubber Ducky River River Rental. Our community has many experts on the Yellowstone River. There are numerous Fly Fishing Guides and experts who can guide you in fly fishing if you don't want to go on your own. And if you are a more passive person you can just sit and enjoy the local bird populations and without much effort, pronghorn and deer. A five mile drive from this guest cottage will start you on a road where you can see black bear in September and October. Occasionally one will wander the streets from Fleshman Creek which is at the end of the block- looking for apples or other good food. Typical wildlife in the area: Pronghorn, elk in the low hills - up a little higher; mountain lions are elusive but seen in the late evenings if lucky. Black bears you will see in the fall and moose have been known to walk around in town near the river. The neighborhood is otherwise quiet and charming. East Geyser is a dead end street which ends just one block from this house which makes the road lightly traveled most of the time. We enjoy the return of pelicans and herons in the spring when they fly over head on their way to and from the river. On special spring days our feeders are filled with Lazuli Buntings. We have grosbeaks in the summer. Expect deer in the yards year round- sometimes even just walking down the street. Raccoons have been known to practice their wily ways when foraging for food. In the fall, September or so, we're not surprised if a black bear does a little roaming through the neighborhood shaking up our dogs and stealing apples. However, once a year when the rodeo comes to town, people flock to this part of town. The rodeo grounds, as well as the county fair grounds, are just a few blocks away. The rodeo is always July 2,3 and 4th. Each night you can watch a half an hour of incredible fireworks right from your front stoop. Livingston is an incredibly dog friendly place. Dogs are very welcome almost anywhere. Sometimes you can even take them into shops with you. If you are looking for pet friendly, Livingston is it. Dogs eat at bank windows, coffee shop windows, even the City utility bill paying window! Traveling outside of Livingston is hard for the pet lover 'cause nowhere else is the same! The population is around 7500 people. To see more about Livingston visit http://www.livingston-chamber.com/. For more about Yellowstone National Park see http://www.nps.gov/ yell/.
